Source of 4 Great Vows

Discuss and learn about the traditional Mahayana scriptures, without assuming that any one school ‘owns’ the only correct interpretation.

Source of 4 Great Vows

Post by Nicholas Weeks »

On top of page 17 of The Teaching of Buddha is a quote that sounds very much like the Four Great Vows; even allowing for the paraphrasing in this book. The source is given as the mahayana-jataka-cittabhumi-pariksa-sutra. Anyone seen an english translation of this work?

Or maybe someone knowing it could confirm or disprove this passage being in this sutra. It begins: "When Buddha decided to break from the worldly life, he made four great vows..."
May all seek, find & follow the Path of Buddhas.

the jap. title of the mahayana-jataka-cittabhumi-pariksa-sutra is perhaps: daijo honsho shinji kwangyo, eng.: mahayana sutra of the contemplation of the process of consciousness of the original lives (of the buddha), nanjio no. 955

no. 955 is Mahâyâna-mulagâta-hridayabhûmi-dhyâna-sutra.

The origin of the Four Great Vows?
