By practicing.
“Observing samaya involves to remain inseparable from the union of wisdom and compassion at all times, to sustain mindfulness, and to put into practice the guru’s instructions”. Garchen Rinpoche

goodness is what comes to pass.
For those who do non-virtuous actions,
that becomes suffering indeed.

Don't forget that one also has to maintain one's samayas. You can practice 24/7/365 for years, but if your samaya is broken or damaged, "the river of siddhi" will not flow. Also, lineage is important, both purity and potency, as well as faith and devotion. Without lineage and faith, it's like digging a dry well.

the same for compassion... an arrogant and compassionless dzogchen practitioner seems to be much less able to attain potentiation and siddhispemachophel wrote:Don't forget that one also has to maintain one's samayas. by the way, practice 24/7/365 without paying attention to the essence of teaching... i think that doesn't work very well xD

interesting, maybe that's why so many monks has become spirits instead of buddhas. Re: Developing Siddhis
Two types of siddhis:
Supreme is realization itself.
Ordinary or common siddhi are various types of supra-normal powers. (Traditionally these are classified as eight in number, but several different lists of eight exist in the literature.) In Buddhism, these are (or at least should be) developed for the purpose of more effectively working for the sake of all sentient beings. IOW, they help fulfill our Bodhisatvic intention.
BTW, in terms of Dzogchen, siddhi (including ordinary siddhi) manifest when one achieves the third vision. They are not just a Tantric thing.

Re: Developing Siddhis
Namaste
Most associate siddhis with aṣṭa-siddhi or the 8 mystic siddhis, however it is not just limited to those 8 main ones. Perhaps people want them without really knowing what they want, a mystical experience, some powers, something above the ordinary.... All of the above in the right measure can be had simple by doing good sadhana and cultivating the 8fold path. Things will develop on ones own course within ones own time with the right effort and guidance. There are also certain tantrics that practice siddhis but usually they create harm in their own minds and superstition and false magic.
Siddhi from the root sidh, to attain. Many relate siddhi to super-normal yogic powers when one thinks of siddhi. Yet this word equally applies to attainment and modes of success one may attain during a number of sadhanas, Siddhi is also associated with perfection. So Siddhi can also be associated with the perfection of an action and sadhana.
There are also Siddhas, or perfected ones, ones who have attained perfection, this also has broad range, siddhas often have specific skills or perfections, and sometimes there are full siddhas who are purnam or complete beings, ie fully realized or enlightened.
Does one need to practice, practice and then practice, well that would depends on where one is starting from, some may prefect some sadhanas more easier than other, depending on past accumulations and current conditioning.
aṣṭa-siddhi
Animā or becoming smaller than the smallest (an atom)
Mahimā or becoming larger than the largest
Laghimā or becoming lighter than the lightest
Prāptị or acquiring anything from anywhere
Prākāmyam or obtaining or performing whatever one desires
Iśitā or manipulating the subpotencies of maya
Vaśitā or the power to bring others under control
Kāmāvasāyitā or obtaining any desired result, to the highest possible limit.
Moggallana was a good example of someone who has super normal yogic physic powers, but even these could not stop his previous accumulated karma. Usually the siddhis are not taught to be cultivated as something separate from true dharma, as one may not know how to use them, if one has opened Prajna Chaksu or wisdom eye then they can use and they will probably understand what these are due to experience, but siddhis without Prajna can lead to harm of oneself and others, then we are talking about negative occult powers, due to gross levels of greed, hatred and delusion still within the mind streams.
Its all very nice and interesting and somewhat esoteric, we do have many secrets stored within our cosmology. Best thing is to get rid or greed , hatred and ignorance and perfect these, if these are perfected then one will gain the highest happiness and that is what most of us are seeking is the highest form of happiness and bliss, he will then be the highest siddha~ perfected being.
The highest stage is to be Buddha , or an awakened one, this comes with all the cool stuff like omniscience and supramundane natural states that we cant even imagine with our tiny conditioned minds, in the Awakened State all perfections "siddhis" are included and one will know how to apply them if and when needed.

The Vissuddhimagga, a Theravada practice manual, also outlines what practice is needed to develop siddhis. So it is not just a Tantra/Dzogchen thing either.pemachophel wrote:BTW, in terms of Dzogchen, siddhi (including ordinary siddhi) manifest when one achieves the third vision. Re: Developing Siddhis
As you insist. Many monks became powerfull spirits due to misusing the buddhadharma methods, examples of this can be the politicaly influenced wrong recognition of Dragpa Gyaltsen who became lately this Dolgyal ("bad spirit of Dol") that creates so many obstacles to dharma; or the people that intentionaly or unintentionaly did make offerings or have had relation with this persistent fierce mundane being -Dolgyal- and where forced to rebirth as part of his retinue; or the practitioner of wrathful deity -i don't remember well wich one- that did not focused on the supreme siddhi and so turned to be a bad spirit as well, and so performing misdeeds, etc. For all of this are official records, references that you should search in the HH The Dalai Lama's biographies and records on the issue in HH's official page.Fortyeightvows wrote:Citation pleasejavier.espinoza.t wrote: interesting, maybe that's why so many monks has become spirits instead of buddhas.
This is most sad, but remind us that we shouldn't practice dharma with the intention of supporting our ego, nor support this kind of activity by means of fear, acceptance, rejection, or any really.
pd: this is not intended to answer the original question of this thread, is just what came up from discussion.
