Previously I thought Imee Oi's music is too sweet and too romantic. My mind has changed now, I think she's a real artist,
her music is worth investigating, worth listening.

I like some of the Sufi music too, they have intensity and concentration in their music and in its expression.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sufi_music

There are similarities between Sufism and the Dharma, there are Sufi schools that regard music contrary to the spiritual path and even harmfull to spiritual development.

Neither do the Sutras or the Vinaya recommend music for anyone who is trying to acieve the dhyanas.

Nevertheless there have developed forms of ritual music and styles of chanting in the Dharma traditions. Is it not music ? -Or not music leading to the sense desire realm ( kamadhatu) ? -Is that possible ?

What do your Dharma teachers say about music? -About its place, or no place at all, in Dharma ?

Phoenix Legend

Post by Luke »

I recently found out about the Chinese pop band Phoenix Legend. The female singer is Mongolian and the male singer is Chinese.

My lama seems to regard some music as offerings. There is a Tibetan tradition of offering songs to lamas (performing songs for them).

A good song which is performed live seems to be a source of temporary joy for many Tibetan lamas.

Thus shall ye think of all this fleeting world:
A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream;
A flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream.
