Please help...

Post by Jeff101713 »

I have been ready books on Pure Land Buddhism and the one answer I can not find is the English translation of the chant that is done by those who follow the Pure Land teachings. I follow the chants I have found on YouTube but don't know what they mean... Thanks...

The main two practices in pureland Buddhism are reciting the Buddha's name and reciting the Amitabha Buddha's spiritual Mantra(Dharani)

I guess by chant you are referring to the Dharani of Amitabha Buddha which is in Sanskrit

Here is the English translation

The Buddha said to Ananda, “You should carefully hold these words in mind. To hold these words in mind is to hold in mind the name of Amitayus Buddha”

Namo Amitabha Buddha

Dharanis, mantras, and name prayers like the nembutsu are generally not translated. They're not translated in English. The nembutsu is just Amitabha's name, so it doesn't make sense to translate. Dharanis and mantras generally don't translate into something with a literal meaning, so the meaning behind them is usually more abstract than a literal translation of them.
