Post by cjdevries » Fri Nov 15, 2019 6:27 pm

I'm not quite sure how to pronounce tsa-tsa. Can someone answer that for me?

Pretty much as written but the emphasis is on the “s” . The “t” is sounded only lightly...so tSA tSA..Hope that helps..

Actually, it's not tsa-tsa but sa-tsa.

That’s not what I was taught...by an actual ethnic Tibetan. But as I said the initial t is barely sounded.

I'm around 'ethnic Tibetans' pretty regularly, they say what sounds like 'saw-saw' to me, with the 's' maybe being slightly hissy, the 't' is barely there.

The first "tsa" is sa for earth, the material sa-tsas are made from.

And there you go. Guess what? In every valley a Lama. From every Lama a Dharma.

Same as it ever was.

And a range of accents and dialects, as in all other countries.
Ask people in the UK to pronounce 'bath' and you get everything from 'beth' through 'baath' to 'baarth' and occasionally 'barf'.
Generally speaking, I am in favour of an easy life, so believe we should use the pronunciation of our masters, or choose Sanskrit if appropriate.
Substituting one Tibetan pronunciation for another, as someone whose first language is English, seems a lot of effort for little return.

Agreed entirely. My first teachers were Khampas which was something else again.

Well I read that “some people call you Lama” so I guess you win the Internet.
